LIBRARY SERVICES
Support for School Libraries
One of the biggest problems faced by school libraries is the non return of library books. Over time the library shelves become depleted and teachers and students suffer as a result.
To ensure continuous access to books school communities, the National Library staff have some good tips to manage your school library collection well :
-
Have an exercise book to record what books go out, to whom and when they are due back.
-
Copy the template below into the exercise book and complete the details of who borrowed what book and when it due for return.
-
If you don't have a school librarian, choose two people to manage the loans for the school library - This could be two senior students appointed by the School Principal or two volunteer parents who would be happy to assist at the beginning or end of the school day.
-
Most importantly, you need to follow up with people who have not returned their books on time.
-
Apply the rule - no new loans until the previous loans have been returned!
Managing your school library properly benefits the whole school community and results in both teachers and students having quick and easy access to books.
The National Library promotes the enjoyment of reading for all children across the Solomon Islands.

Staff are always readily available to help students. The library is open each Monday, Wednesday and Friday and all students are welcome to use the National Library resources.
Please remember - books are not available for loan but for reference only. Photocopying faciltiies are available.
Storytelling
Each Tuesday and Wednesday morning, the National Library runs storytelling sessions for young children who are unable to attend school.
Each storytelling sessions is run to a theme of an alphabetical letter of the week and stories and colouring in activities focus on this letter.
Tuesday is for 2-3 years olds; and Wednesday is for 4-6 year olds. Parents are encouraged to attend and participate. National Library staff promote good reading for young children because we believe that "Kids who read succeed".
